Year 6 (10+) is the youngest entry point into Emanuel. We take 48 pupils into Hill form in two forms of 24.

If your child is not successful in gaining a place in year 6 (10+), we will offer you the chance to register for year 7 (11+). Please note that if you reject the offer of a place at year 6 (10+), you will not be able to re-register for year 7 (11+).

Registration for September 2025 will open in late May.

Changes to the year 6 (10+) entry process

Before 2017, Emanuel had a cap on the number of applications being made to the school. Since 2017, we have not had such a limit on applications, and we have maintained our long-held intention to interview every child making an application. These interviews have always been held before the formal written assessments. In the last few years, we have found that the number of pupils applying to enter the application process has placed significant strain on the interview processes. We have also questioned whether it has been the very best experience for the pupils and their parents.

What will the new entry process look like?

For pupils applying for September 2025 entry, the assessment timeline will be as shown in the ‘key dates’ below. We will still plan to interview a high percentage of those applying to the school, probably more than many schools, yet these interviews will come after the formal written assessments and be dependent on a pupil’s performance in the entrance exams.

We have added a group experience in addition to the interview. This is designed to allow the pupils to demonstrate their creative skills and their ability to work effectively as a member of a small team. We are hopeful that the children will find this element of the assessment process enriching and enjoyable.

Those pupils who do well enough in the exams to be considered for an academic scholarship will take part in a slightly different interview process that will also include a small group experience. As well as a general interview, they will also meet with a member of the English and the Maths department.

Pupil Focused

As always, we will make sure every part of the process is as positive and helpful as it can be for young people applying to our school.

Friendly tips for a smooth application process

Please ensure that the contact details we hold (especially email) are up to date. Please ring the admissions office to check if in doubt, otherwise there is a risk you will miss crucial information which is sent via email. The offers are sent by post; if you move address, please let us know or the letter will be sent to an old address.

When possible, please submit with good time before a deadline. There may be a delay in acknowledgement due to a last minute rush.

If you wish to withdraw a candidate, please email the admissions office and we can remove them from the list.

Exam concessions

If you are seeking special exam arrangements of any kind (including extra time or use of a computer), the child’s educational psychologist’s report must be sent in when requested, this must be under two years old.

Exam concession requests are reviewed in line with the requirements of the ‘Joint Council for Qualifications’; they will only be awarded if the pupil would be granted the concessions in external formal exams. The headmaster’s decision on exam concession requests is final. The school will confirm in writing which, if any, special arrangements will be made for the candidate. Candidates must bring the letter of confirmation to the entrance exam.

If your child has an educational psychologist’s report you must supply this information if you accept the offer of a place.
