Year 9 is the first year of the Middle School. We have a small number of places available at this entry point; the exact number varies every year (usually around 6-8).

Registration for September 2021 is now closed. We cannot accept late registrations and cannot consider any late requests. 

We are aware that uncertainty about how the admissions process will be affected by the Covid-19 restrictions will be adding to the anxiety of pupils and parents this term.

Our aim is to make the process as fair, safe and welcoming as possible for all families. Although we want to offer a clear plan for the entrance process this year, we are aware that disruption to these plans could occur at any point and we will have to be as nimble as possible in such circumstances.

Important update regarding the 13+ entry point

After much careful consideration we have made the decision to close the 13+ (Year 9) entry to Emanuel School. There will not be a 13+ entry process for September 2022 (and beyond) and it will not be possible to formally register for this entry point.

We have made this decision due to the increasingly low availability of places at this entry point which means we are unfortunately having to turn down excellent candidates.

We will continue to operate an occasional vacancy list and will admit pupils into Year 9, if there are places available, subject to assessment and interview.

The admissions process

Before registering your child at Emanuel, you may wish to view our prospectus or come and visit us at one of our open events.

When you have decided to register your child at Emanuel School, please complete the appropriate registration form linked below. Registration costs £145 per child.

Once registration is received, the admissions office will send confirmation of registration. This may take up to two weeks.

October of year before entry: A copy of your child’s end of Year 7 school report will be required and the admissions office will seek a reference from your child’s current headteacher.

January of year of entry: Entrance exam consisting of four papers: Maths, Science, English and a language. The language choices are French, Spanish, German or Latin.

Those pupils who are successful in the entrance exams are called back for interview soon after the exam. The interview will last approximately 20 minutes.

February, year of entry: Offers of places will be made dependent on:

  • a satisfactory headteacher’s reference
  • a satisfactory school report
  • successful marks in the entrance exams
  • a successful interview

March, year of entry: Deadline for acceptance of places.

Exam concessions

If you are seeking special exam arrangements of any kind (including extra time or use of a computer), the child’s educational psychologist’s report must be sent in when requested, this must be under two years old.

Exam concession requests are reviewed in line with the requirements of the ‘Joint Council for Qualifications’; they will only be awarded if the pupil would be granted the concessions in external formal exams. The headmaster’s decision on exam concession requests is final. The school will confirm in writing which, if any, special arrangements will be made for the candidate. Candidates must bring the letter of confirmation to the entrance exam.

If your child has an educational psychologist’s report you must supply this information if you accept the offer of a place.
