Emanuel pupils are currently raising funds for a social enterprise in The Gambia ahead of the trip later this month.
19 pupils from Year 11 are currently preparing for an exciting and potentially life-changing trip to The Gambia this October half term, accompanied by Mr Skinner, Miss Tendler and Miss Sidhu. As part of this trip, the participants are raising funds to support the setting up of The Smiling Food co. – a new social enterprise established by Global Hands, the charity who will be hosting the group whilst in The Gambia.
The Smiling Food co. is a food-processing enterprise and sustainable development initiative that aims to provide employment for young people in rural areas of The Gambia, where job opportunities are limited. Based at the Global Hands Development Hub in Manduar, The Smiling Food co. will grow, package and export a variety of products including nuts and dried fruit. At this stage, funding is needed to purchase some more equipment so that the local team can start processing and packaging the produce.
The participants are currently organising fundraising activities ahead of the trip. We are very grateful for all the generous donations received so far and are delighted that a total of over £,1200 has been donated already (including £500 collected at Dacre Day). Any help with reaching the £5,000 target for this campaign would greatly appreciated. Please visit this fundraising page for more information. If you have any questions/suggestions please contact Mr Skinner (james.skinner@emanuel.org.uk).
