On the first week and a half of the summer term, we have had three tennis teams compete in the first round of the School Sport Magazine Tennis Cup with some roaring success.
On Wednesday the 23rd of April, Finlay (year 10) led Tom (year 11), Louis (year 11) and Alberto (year 10) against Latymer Upper School in an U16 boys event. Finlay was dominant in his no.1 seeded match, giving us a fantastic start against some impressive opposition. Further on, after some well matched singles and doubles ties, the match between the two schools came down to a deciding tie break after we found ourselves at 3 sets a piece, with an equal number of games. Impressively, Louis and Finlay were able to win the deciding doubles tie-break, taking us through to the next round.
In a similar fashion, on Thursday the 24th of April, four boys comprising of Sebastian (year 8), Lorenzo, James, and Tristan (all year 9) took on the impressive task of taking on UCS Hampstead in their first-round clash. After travelling up to Hampstead on a sunny Thursday afternoon, the team was led by an impressive victory by our no.1 player Seb, who managed to down his opponent 6-0. Seb used a variety of shots, taking a lot of the pace off the ball in many moments to integrate some beautiful drop shots and make his opponent make the mistakes. Another notable moment from this fixture was Tristan’s singles match, losing 7-6 after almost every service game went to deuce – with some excruciatingly long rallies taking place. Ultimately, the team won the tie 4 sets to 2, taking the team through to the next round.
On Tuesday 29th of April, our U14 girls side travelled to Godolphin and Latymer School to play a very strong collection of tennis players. Our team of Elena (year 8) and Millie, Betsy, and Chloe (year 9) were valiant in their efforts, and although were not able to win a set against their opposition, their efforts throughout the match were impressive, with a large percentage of games going to deuce, and some fantastic serving from all four girls.
In the coming week we also have our U16 Girls’ teams playing in their first round clash, with our victorious boys’ teams playing their second round matches later on in the term. An exciting time for tennis at Emanuel!
