Emanuel School is committed to creating and sustaining a community in which all people, from all backgrounds and cultures feel included, respected and able to have their voice heard.

At Emanuel, we recognise that inequality, exclusion and discrimination exist within society at all levels. We reject these things by striving to create and maintain an atmosphere where pupils and staff feel welcomed, accepted and safe. We demonstrate that in the ways that we behave towards each other as active ambassadors, allies and supporters of each other’s backgrounds, beliefs and protected characteristics. We seek to respect everyone’s needs, identity, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity.  We recognise that this is a matter for all members of the school community.

Our commitment to inclusivity, equality and diversity is reflected in our day-to-day approaches to school life and underpinned through our policies, procedures, all staff and governor training; as well as pupil education. It is also evident in our pupil groups, which meet regularly and have affected tangible change in the school. Details of our pupil groups are below. Each group has a member of staff helping to lead them. Matters raised in these meetings, are brought to the attention to the senior management team and governing body, as well as made known to the wider pupil community and parents.

The Archer Group

The Archer Group is our pupil voice diversity society named in honour of John Richard Archer, former Mayor of Battersea and the first black person to hold a senior public office in London. It comprises school staff from across all employee positions and pupils of different ages and backgrounds. Its task is to review the school’s curriculum, structures and population, through the lenses of the diverse members of the Emanuel community.

Athena

The Athena Society is our gender equality group named after the Greek goddess of wisdom. Through interweaving a variety of disciplines, the group discusses interesting, important and overlooked stories about gender equality across art, classics, history, politics, philosophy and culture. Each term the group reviews articles, books, films and news stories to uncover and understand the hidden stories and struggles of women through time.

Pride

Our Pride group celebrates those members of our community who are LGBTQ+ and aims to increase understanding of awareness of issues related to LGTBQ+ wellbeing and equality. Our annual Pride week sees pupils engaging in Pride themed lessons. For example, learning about how sexuality and gender has been explored through literature in English, the history of the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in History and learning about LGBTQ+ people of faith in Religious Studies. In Life Education, students have the opportunity to explore the life stories of famous LGBTQ+ people and reflect upon the various successes and challenges they had experienced in life related to their identity.

The Bridge : gender equality and mutual respect groups

We have established three pupil voice groups (Lower School, Middle School, and Sixth Form) with the purpose of addressing issues of gender equality and mutual respect to shape the school’s actions over the coming years, to ensure Emanuel remains the kind and respectful community we wish it to be. School Council

All pupils have the opportunity to contribute items for discussion at the school council through their year group council meetings. Representatives from each form meet once a term for a meeting chaired by the head of year. At this meeting, they agree an agenda item to take to the full school council meeting in the second half of the term. The full school council meeting involves representatives from each year group (year 6 to upper sixth) and is chaired by the pupil voice prefect and attended by senior members of staff.

There have been a number of agenda items relating to EDI issues in the recent past that have led to changes in the school such as the introduction of further gender-neutral toilets, the gender-blind awarding of academic medals, adjustments to the school uniform and the discussion of renaming the school’s houses.
