Congratulations to Hetty and Edward in Lower Sixth who have both gained places at the University of Oxford. Hetty has an offer for Chemistry at Lincoln College and Edward has an offer for Chemistry at Wadham College. We caught up with them to find out more about their application process.

What support did you have throughout your application?

Hetty: Weekly sessions with the chemistry department were really helpful. We also had mock interviews with an external company, Oxbridge Applications, and closer to the interview, practised with members of the chemistry department. Ms Brown was great at explaining all of the topics.
Edward: The mock interviews we did at school were really similar to my actual interview so it was a really useful exercise. They taught me to think on the spot and that helped a lot during the real thing.

Why did you choose chemistry?

Hetty: Chemistry relates to everything and growing up with global warming, I am aware that chemistry will be so fundamental to tackling the climate crisis.
Edward: Seeing the practical applications of chemistry and where it can go! Chemistry is really important and I love the fact that I will be able to make a real difference. Chemistry could help to solve a lot of global issues.

What are you most looking forward to?

Hetty: Labs! I am really looking forward to the practical element of the course. I am also looking forward to the college experience, particularly as I have chosen a small college with a close-knit community.
Edward: The uni experience! The college I have chosen is known for being quite outgong so I think it will be a lot of fun!

What are your future ambitions?
Hetty: I would like to do a PHD afterwards and then go into academia. I am particularly interested in the climate side of chemistry.
Edward: Do the masters (which is part of the course), but above all, I am really looking forward to working with experts in their field and finding out more from them about the options available to me.

What will you miss most about Emanuel?

Hetty: My friends and the whole community. I have known some of my teachers for seven years!
Edward: Friends and teachers- I am so grateful to them for helping me to get to where I am!

We wish them both the very best of luck!
