Emanuel’s 100-Book Challenge has grown from strength to strength this year, with hundreds of pupils working towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for reading.
Introduced last year, the 100-Book Challenge revolves around specially created reading lists for all year groups carefully curated by our Oxbridge and Academic Enrichment Coordinator, Mr Maskell, and our senior librarian, Mr Jones, who — along with his fellow librarians — has an extensive knowledge of children’s and YA literature. Each year group has a list of 100 books, with a fantastic range of genres and styles, both classic and contemporary, and prizes are awarded for the number of books read and reviewed from their respective lists over the course of the academic year.
Pupils are given Bronze awards for reading and reviewing 10 books; Silver awards for 15; and the coveted Gold award for working their way through 20 books in the year. Last year, over 40 pupils from Year 6 to the Upper-Sixth were awarded prizes; this year (with the challenge more firmly integrated into English lessons and wider school culture) is set to blow this figure out of the water! One Year 6 pupil last year even managed to read all 100 books from their list, and we look forward to hearing about many others who have risen to the challenge when the librarians collate the final tallies in June.
