For Black History Month this year, our school hosted a variety of activities to celebrate and educate the community. The library curated a special exhibition featuring books showcasing Black history and voices. Each day, there were recommendations for watching, reading, and listening, promoting Black stories and culture. Daily Black History bulletins, with 25 articles written by teachers, support staff, and pupils, offered insights and reflections throughout the month.
Moreover, students participated in steel pan workshops, and the Lower School Book Club read “Ghost Boys” by Jewell Parker Rhodes, sparking meaningful conversations. The National Theatre’s “Small Island” was screened by the Drama department, offering a powerful narrative about the Windrush generation. Debating societies were active, with the Senior Debating Society considering whether the West should pay reparations for slavery, and the Junior Debating Club discussing whether the Black Lives Matter protests achieved their aims.
The PRISM pupil voice group focused on the topic of Black queer activism, and the Middle School Book club also engaged in discussions about Black history. The month culminated in a celebratory lunch, bringing the community together to honour Black culture.
