French students enjoying a tasty homework task this weekend celebrating the French tradition of celebrating  a special date, 6 January, called” l’ Épiphanie”.  It is also known as la Fête des Rois.

The Year 7 pupils celebrated the end of Christmas by following the French tradition of making a “galette des rois”. The French have been serving up galette des rois since the 14th-century celebrating the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem. The cake is traditionally shared at Epiphany, on the 6th of January in celebration of the journey of the Three Kings (les Rois Mages) who followed the star of Bethlehem, found baby Jesus (l’Enfant Jesus) and gave him their gifts of gold, frankincense and mirre (l’or, l’encens et la myrrhe).

The cake  is composed of a puff pastry cake, with a small charm, the “fève”, hidden inside. It is usually filled with frangipane, a cream made from sweet almonds, butter, eggs, and sugar. Here are some amazing looking examples of galette made by Khalil with beautifully risen pastry and Jago with skilfully decorated top pastry.

Bon appétit!
