‘Is Democracy on the Way Out?’ A fascinating question that formed the basis of the annual St Luke’s Debate. 25 Politics students were lucky enough to spend their Thursday evening hearing from luminaries including Baroness Hale, Lord O’Donnell, Andrew Rawnsley and Neil Jameson.
Whilst there was certainly no consensus that democracy was working perfectly, each of the panellists was able to find cause for optimism about the state of democracy in Britain and around the world. Agreement was broadly reached that whilst we were certainly in the midst of a crisis partially of our own making, it was not one that threatened the very existence of democracy in the UK. The students who attended felt incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to hear such a high-level discussion on a truly fascinating topic.
