Oedipus rehearsals are in full swing with our first run full company run through this weekend. The cast are all working incredibly hard on learning lines, remembering their blocking, working on their characterisation, and showing brilliant teamwork as we bring Sophocles’ 2500-year-old text to life. If you’re looking for a traditional Greek performance with dusty togas and masked chorus, you’ll need to look elsewhere I’m afraid. Set against the backdrop of ecological collapse, a freak plague has destroyed the land and is now working its way one-by-one through the people of Thebes. All they need to do to survive is find the murderer of the old King. Simple.
Things are getting appropriately gory in our production meetings and our fabulous production team and tech students have been working hard to transform the Fiennes theatre. The entirety of senior tech club and three technicians positioned an 8m curtain rail using all our skills of communication and cooperation, it takes a lot of that to create Miss Gu’s dual purpose set. Future challenges include getting the trees and sand banks to the first floor!
We can’t wait to share this with the school in a double-bill with Antigone next month.
