The Psychotronic Book Club met this week to discuss Gus Moreno’s surprise smash hit debut horror novel ‘This Thing Between Us’. Published at the end of 2021 this head-scratcher had book lovers all over the world arguing over what it was truly about. Our group of Emily, Maddie, Esme, Freya and Lucy were no different and had a lot of fun discussion this truly cryptic cult novel which reached the final round of the horror section of the prestigious Goodreads Choice Awards. The ending was particularly obscure, but everyone was full of fascinating theories about what exactly happened and whether it had a deeper message beyond the power of grief and loss.
Psychotronic meets once every half-term to discuss usually rather ‘weird’ books, these are often cult, classic or genre titles, with horror fiction being our focus over the last year. We love the different ways in which some tales can be interpreted and lead to heated discussions, theories and arguments.
We are keen to recruit new members, Year 10+ pupils are all welcome, and anybody in these year groups can see the librarian Mr Jones should they want to find out more. We always read adults novels, but those chosen are always accessible to teenagers who are confident readers.
Our next selection is Joshua Gaylord’s ‘When We Were Animals’ a rather hypnotic story of teenagers in a strange town where the story is set ‘breach’. What does this mean? You will have to read the novel to find out….. ‘When We Were Animals’ was a 2016 finalist for the prestigious literary Shirley Jackson Award.
In the attached photo the group are posing with a wide selection of the fantastic titles we have read over the last few years.
