On Tuesday 22nd November, the Physics department were delighted to welcome Nuclear Engineer Matt O’Kelly onto the school site. Speaking to over fifty pupils in the Hampden Hall, Matt began by discussing his career path from school to his current role in the nuclear power sector. He discussed the benefits of nuclear power in helping the UK to achieve sustainable net zero energy production and dispelled many of the myths around the dangers of nuclear fission reactors. Pupils were also highly interested to learn of the engineering challenges in running a complex Uranium reactor and saw how their understanding from GCSE and A-Level Physics could be applied to real world science.
