Y13 A Level PE students spent the day experiencing what it may be like to study Sports Science at St Mary’s University on Thursday (22nd September). They arrived and were straight into the nutrition labs where they baked a pre-workout and post-workout snack of cherry flapjack. They then discussed the importance of each of the ingredients to enhancing sporting performance and recovery.

After lunch they began some testing in the physiology labs where they collected data on each other whilst exercising, including HR, RPE, blood lactate and gas analysis using Douglas bags. This would then allow them to understand what energy system they were using when working at different intensities.

It was a great experience which gave them a taste of what University life may offer whilst also applying the theory from their A Level Studies.
