We are delighted to announce the appointment of Miss Kerry Smith as Director of Sport from January 2023. Miss Smith joins us from Bromley High School where she is currently Director of Sport.
She has been teaching for over 11 years, during which time she has coached both girls and boys at a high-level to be successful and to enjoy their sport. She is excited to lead Emanuel during the next phase of its sporting evolution as we seek to become the leading co-educational school for sport in south-west London.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Sports Department at Emanuel School. I look forward to meeting pupils, staff and parents to build upon a very positive foundation of sporting culture.”
Miss Smith attended the University of Birmingham where she read Sport and Exercise Science. A national level tennis player, during her time at Birmingham, she captained the ladies’ 1st Team, competing in the Premier League. She has also competed nationally as a junior tennis player around the UK, including at SW19 in the prestigious Road to Wimbledon.
She completed her PGCE whilst teaching PE and Games at The Royal Grammar School, Newcastle, following two roles as a graduate teacher, including at Rugby School. During four years at Magdalen College School, Oxford, she was Head of Girls’ Sport, as well as coaching both netball, rugby and hockey, and overseeing the extensive co-educational tennis programme across the school. She was also appointed Head of Year 8, assuming pastoral responsibility for almost 100 pupils.
She continues to be an active sportswoman herself, having played south region netball, completed various triathlons and half marathons, including the Great North Run. As a member of Westside Tennis Club, she recently won the Ladies’ Singles Championship.
Miss Smith will succeed Mr Hanson who has been promoted to Assistant Head: Co-curricular at Elizabeth College, Guernsey. We are enormously grateful for the exceptional work he has undertaken in charge of sport at Emanuel over almost seven years, overseeing and enhancing our comprehensive sports offering, the growth of pupil participation across the school and our impressive programme of inter-school fixtures.
