Year 11-13 Classical Civilisation and Greek students enjoyed a trip to UCL’s production of Euripides’ ‘Bacchae’ at the Bloomsbury Theatre. It was an excellent tragedy, closely modelled on the original Greek with contemporary touches.
The production was greatly enjoyed by students, many of whom are studying the text in translation for the ‘Greek Theatre’ module. The use of the chorus was particularly insightful, and the stichomythic exchanges between Pentheus and Dionysus had great energy and character. The themes of chaos vs order, closed-mindedness and retribution feel as pertinent now as they did 2,500 years ago when the play was first performed.
We look forward to next year’s show! Evoe!
