168 Year 7 students had an exciting Latin trip to St Albans on Tuesday 5th and Thursday 7th July.

Students visited the Museum where they learned about the Catuvellauni tribe and the history of the site at Verulamium, as well as viewing the famous ‘Shell Mosaic’. There was a chance to buy memorable military souvenirs and students left with a sarcina full of swords, breastplates and Roman history books.

Mr Adams led a tour around St Albans where we visited the ‘Ye Olde Fighting Cocks’, the oldest pub in the UK, and St Albans School which has taught Latin for over 1,000 years.

We also visited the Roman Theatre where the scene was set for a Shakespeare production, as well as being received with the usual warm welcome at St Albans Cathedral and Abbey. Here we learned about the myth of Saint Alban, and the story of his executioner whose eyes fell out of their sockets upon being struck blind.

Students had the chance to enjoy some ice cream at the café and had a go on some of the rides at the park.

It was a superb day with a leisurely pace and variety of sites, allowing the students to enhance their understanding of the Cambridge Latin Course. Thank you to Mr Adams, Mr Morrison, Miss Williams, Ms Hoult, Mr Burgess, Miss Fitzgibbon, Mrs Macchia Riley, Miss Vincent, Mr Lancaster, Mrs Chetwood, Mr Hanson, Ms Jovanovic-Callaghan, Miss Routledge, Miss Johnson, Miss Casais and Mr Borkowski for their help and organisation.
