The Mathematics department would like to congratulate Luke, Joe, Siddiq, Thomas and Izzy for being the first ever Emanuel students to sit the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1).

The BMO1 examination lasts three and a half hours, which is almost incompressible to most mortals, and consists of six very challenging questions, acting as the preliminary stage to select the British mathematics team. Indeed, only 1,000 pupils qualify for the BMO1.

Remarkably, Joe received a distinction, placing him in the top 25 percent of this incredibly able cohort, and Siddiq was just one mark short of a distinction – it is worth noting that they are both in the lower sixth form. To their great credit, Izzy and Luke were awarded a merit, and Thomas performed well narrowly missing a similar accolade.

These are unprecedented and exciting times in the world of Mathematics at Emanuel. We now look forward to seeing how they perform in the BMO2.

Miss Sidhu and Mr Leadbetter (Mathematics)
