The Classics Department arranged a trip for 31 sixth form Classical Civilisation students to see the prestigious Cambridge University Greek Play, held triennially.
This year it was a double bill – ‘Persians’ by Aeschylus and ‘Cyclops’ by Euripides. Both plays were performed in the original ancient Greek along with surtitles. Previous productions are available to view online on YouTube and have included such distinguished cast members as Cambridge Classics graduate Tom Hiddleston.
Watching the plays in the original language enhanced students’ understanding of the ‘Greek Theatre’ module studied by Classical Civilisation students in Year 12, whilst also providing the opportunity to see the only complete surviving satyr play, with a storyline which ties into Homer’s ‘Odyssey’.
Students enjoyed both performances and had an amazing time led by Mr Andrews and Ms Philp. Mr Adams had to reorganise the trip whilst abroad on a separate school trip to Naples, and so a massive thank you to Mr Andrews (and family) for stepping in to help at the last moment.
