We were delighted to recently receive a copy of Dr Roy Morgan’s (OE1953-61) latest book Cricket in a Multicultural Society: a History of Cricket in Malaysia which has just been published.

The school archive houses a large collection of books written both by and about OEs. In the past, when Roy previously visited, he also very kindly donated his other books Real International Cricket and The Encyclopedia of World Cricket (all three books pictured above with Mr Chris Booth, Director of Cricket).

As a pupil Roy was the scorer for the 1st XI team and was a talented athlete and cross country runner. After studying Geography at university he returned to Emanuel to teach between 1966 and 68. Roy later became a highly distinguished geographer, working in universities and writing many books on subjects such as soil erosion. In the archive we also have the ‘Morgan Cup’, a running trophy which was awarded to the winner of the ‘Christmas Handicap’ and was named after Roy.

Chris Booth was incredibly impressed by the sheer depth of cricket knowledge on display in Roy’s books, but felt that if he was to ever write a book on cricket trivia he might be worthy of a footnote mention himself! Due to Covid-19 the season for 2020 was completely cancelled, but in the following September the 1st XI played one wining fixture and did not play again until Easter 2021. Chris felt his ‘great unbeaten run’ was worthy of some small footnote, even if it was only one game!

After the disappointment of last season Chris has enjoyed familiarising himself with our many traditional foes over this season, including Hampton, Tiffin, Dulwich, KCS and Reeds.
