Modern Design and Technology is a blend of innovation, exploration and creative problem solving. As the school progresses the critical build plan, the D&T Department is relocating to the ground floor of the Dacre building, where there will be two multi-disciplinary workshops, a machine hub and a technician’s workshop.
This is a well-timed development when exciting career opportunities are continually expanding in engineering, computer aided design, product design, construction and architecture. We have already achieved impressive things with our students, as you will see below, and are looking forward to making optimal use of the new facilities with all our aspiring designers and engineers.
Recent successes for Design and Technology students at Emanuel
In 2022 Emanuel became an Arkwright school and we are incredibly proud to have two Arkwright Scholars this year. This is a very prestigious award and at the time of writing this we are waiting on the results of three more students in Y11.
An Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams to change the world as an outstanding engineer of the future. Kathryn and Thomas were selected from over 1391 applicants and underwent a rigorous and competitive selection process, from an online application to the aptitude exam, culminating in a virtual interview. The scholarships they have been awarded place Katherine with The Worshipful Company of Scientific Instrument Makers and Tom with the Royal Air Force (RAF). This comprehensive programme assesses each student’s engineering knowledge and helps them develop key life skills including leadership and creative thinking.
Excitingly in 2024, one of our Upper Sixth pupils has been offered a place at Cambridge to read Design – the first year in which this innovatory undergraduate course in architecture, engineering and material science from a global perspective has been offered.

New equipment for new D&T!
The new facilities will include new digital machines which will enhance students’ work in both the engineering and technology elements of the course.
As well as new lathes, milling machine, drills and saws, Emanuel is investing in 3D printing and laser technology too.
We will also have a new laser cutter and at least two new 3D printers.
Computer aided design (CAD) is an integral part of modern D&T and the department has embraced this new technology. The new D&T suite will benefit from WIFI 6 technology and a specialised bank of laptops.

New Design and Technology is a blend of creativity, innovation and practical skills. Whether it be product design, furniture design or engineering, these new facilities will encourage a wider and broader range of students and inspire the next generation of Emanuel designers.
