Last week we attended the national final of the Online Reading Championship Quiz, which was hosted by Goldsmith’s Hall, near St. Paul’s and were delighted to finish an amazing second place in the 22-team final. We qualified for this prestigious event sponsored by the National Literacy Trust after winning ‘Cross-Regional Heat 1’ last March and in the final quizzed against teams who had travelled from as far afield as Scotland and Northern Ireland. We were also delighted to be presented with the trophy for winning the earlier Cross-Regional Heat.
This high-profile event was beautifully run and featured a host of top authors, book celebrities and online literary well-wishers. The organisers pulled out all the stops in making our pupils feel special and the day truly celebrated and championed the power of reading. All eighty (many very difficult) questions were fiction based, covering both old, classic, and very contemporary books and our team of four Year 8 girls rose to the challenge. Everybody also loved the extravert quiz master Mr Dilly who has been the host of all heats over the last three years, and we were delighted to have our photo taken with this great character.
Book quizzes are a long tradition at Emanuel School, and we have been entering competitions since 2010 and have many internal events. However, this was only our second appearance in a National Final, eight long years since we competed in the national stage of the Kids’ Lit Quiz. ‘Quizzing’ can be contagious, and we will do our upmost to qualify for the national final again next year.
Very well done to our team, who were:
