During the period of school closure, OE Mark Miodownik (Professor of Materials and Society at UCL) challenged Emanuel students to create a robot recycling machine for the home.

The machine needed to fit in the same space as a washing machine and automatically sort and separate recycling waste so that it can be dealt with more efficiently. The aim of the challenge was for students to develop engineering skills by engaging with an interesting project during lockdown.

Mark was delighted with the quality of the entries and the thought that had been put into them.

However, there can only be one winner and Mark selected Konstantin in Year 10. Mark congratulated Konstantin for his ‘excellent attention to detail and knowledge of mechanism’ in his design. He also said, ‘The world needs you!’ Konstantin’s video entry with diagrams was thoughtful, well-considered and comprehensive.

Mark also commended Dougie Wadie in Year 9 and Amelia Molloy in Year 10 for their designs.

The winners will each receive a signed copy of Mark Miodownik’s book, Liquid: The Delightful and Dangerous Substances That Flow Through our Lives with an individual message written inside along with a book token.

Many congratulations to Konstantin, Dougie and Amelia for rising to the engineering challenge with such enthusiasm and talent.
