Last week, Mr Healy kicked off this year’s Senior Literary Society with a talk on Narrative in the Novels of Ian McEwan.
The talk was well attended by Sixth Form students and staff, with Mr Healy speaking about how Ian McEwan is one of Britain’s leading contemporary novelists. He explained how McEwan’s success and popularity can be attributed to both the clarity and stylish nature of his prose as well as his willingness to tackle taboo subjects and character conflicts unflinchingly. He opined that McEwan’s novels are full of ‘people behaving badly’ and mainly cover the topical concerns of the contemporary moment. He spoke about Atonement, On Chesil Beach, Nutshell, The Children Act, Machines Like Me and Sweet Tooth. He concluded: ‘They are novels for our times. Well-written, provocative and never dull, they shine a light on recent events’. The talk was well received by staff and students who will now read Nutshell as part of Lit Group.
