As we reach the midpoint of the term, it’s been an incredibly active and successful period for the school’s rugby programme. With 18 teams representing the school, from U11s to our senior 1st and 2nd XV squads, there has been no shortage of thrilling fixtures and proud moments on the pitch. Here’s a look at how our teams have fared across different age groups and competitions.

Strong Competitive Blocks Against Top Schools

Our teams have been put to the test in competitive blocks against strong opposition, including Caterham School, Latymer Upper School, Reed’s School, and Worth School. These fixtures have allowed our players to showcase their talent and determination, often rising to the occasion against formidable rivals. Across the board, our players have displayed grit and growth, with several teams delivering standout performances.

U16, U15, and U14 Teams Shine

Particularly impressive this term have been our U16A, U15A, and U14A teams, who all secured victories against Reed’s School. The U16A and U15A teams deserve special recognition, having maintained unbeaten records so far this season. These squads have shown great cohesion, tactical discipline, and individual brilliance, all of which have contributed to their winning streaks.

U12 and U13s Compete in Surrey Schools Festivals

Our U12 and U13 teams have represented the school admirably at the highly competitive Surrey Schools Festivals, held at RGS Guildford and Trinity School. These festivals offer a fantastic platform for our younger players to develop their skills in a competitive environment, and both age groups have risen to the challenge, putting in determined performances against some of the best teams in the region.

Expanding Rugby Provision: Touch Rugby and RFU Trials

This term has also seen an exciting expansion in our rugby provision, with a focus on broadening the game’s appeal and accessibility. We’ve hosted and participated in Touch Rugby Festivals for Year 7, 8, and 9 students, fostering enjoyment and inclusivity within the sport. Particularly noteworthy is Year 9’s involvement in the RFU’s trial of the “Third Game Concept,” an initiative aimed at modifying contact rugby to increase long-term participation. This trial is an important step in ensuring that rugby remains a safe and enjoyable sport for all students.

Senior Girls Prepare for Rosslyn Park National Sevens

A landmark moment for the school’s rugby programme is the formation of our Senior Girls’ rugby squad. For the first time, they are training with the goal of entering the prestigious Rosslyn Park National Sevens tournament next spring. Their commitment and progress so far have been truly inspiring, and they are laying a strong foundation for future female rugby players at the school. This initiative is an exciting development in promoting inclusivity and gender diversity in rugby at our school.

Pathway Success: Players Progressing to Elite Levels

This half-term has also seen several of our students advance in elite rugby pathways, with players being retained by Surrey Rugby, Ealing Trailfinders RFC, Saracens RFC, and Harlequins RFC. Their progression is a testament to their hard work and dedication, as well as the expert guidance provided by our coaching staff. The commitment of these players, alongside the support from their coaches, has placed them in an excellent position to pursue rugby at a higher level.

Conclusion: A Half-Term of Growth, Achievement, and Exciting Prospects

This half-term has undoubtedly been a period of achievement, growth, and opportunity for all involved in our rugby programme. From our unbeaten U16A and U15A teams to the ground-breaking formation of our Senior Girls’ squad, there is much to be proud of. As we look ahead to the remainder of the season, the future of rugby at the school looks bright, with more exciting fixtures, tournaments, and opportunities for development on the horizon.
