Year 10 pupil Mariela Brown recently baked a cake for her Classical Civilisation class, following an ancient Roman recipe.

True to the original recipe – set down in the 1st Century AD by Apicius in his de re coquinaria (On the Subject of Cooking) – the cake was both sweet and savoury, containing crushed rosemary and coated in honey syrup. As well as being an authentic Roman treat it was delicious, and we lapped it up whilst lamenting the fate of the Roman empire.
